  My Story

  Shalom! My name is Hadar Markin, and I have been teaching Hebrew and Jewish history for the last 15 years in the Chicago area. I am experienced at working with different ages and levels from beginners to native speakers in formal Jewish day schools settings but also in various experimental programs. As a native Israeli, I am passionate about teaching Hebrew using authentic materials, such as tv commercials, music and youtube videos. This stems from my strong belief that language learning occurs within a context of culture and history.
  One of my favorite things to do at home and with my students is cooking. I am excited to share some of my recipes with you and bring the flavors and smells of Israeli food to your household.

  Holocaust education is another important thread in my career. My experience outside of the classroom includes participating in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos, 1933-1945 as a translator and a researcher focusing mostly on the plight of North African communities.

  I hold an M.A. from Spertus College in Jewish Professional studies, with a specialization in education as well as a B.A. in Middle Eastern Studies, Honors Program and Political Science from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

  שלום! שמי הדר מרקין, ואני מורה לעברית ולהיסטוריה יהודית מזה 15 שנה בשיקגו ופרבריה. הניסיון המקצועי שלי כולל עבודה עם תלמידים בגילאים שונים, ברמות מגוונות ממתחילים ועד לדוברים במסגרות פורמליות של בית ספר יומי יהודי אך גם בתכניות א-פורמליות ניסוייות.
  כצברית, אני אוהבת לעשות שימוש בחומרים אותנטיים, כמו פרסומות, מוזיקה וסרטוני יו-טיוב, שכן להשקפתי לימודי שפה צריכים להילמד בהקשר היסטורי-תרבותי.
  אחד מהתחביבים שלי זה בישול בבית, אבל גם בכיתה (אפילו הוירטואלית). אני מקווה שיצא לנו לבשל יחד, ואוכל להביא את הטעמים והניחוחות של ישראל לבית שלכם.
  חינוך בנושא השואה הינו מרכיב חשוב נוסף בדרכי המקצועית. הניסיון שלי כולל השתתפות כמתרגמת וכחוקרת במוזיאון השואה בוושינגטון בפרויקט האנציקלופדיה של מחנות וגטאות, 1933-1945, עם התמקדות בגורלן של קהילות צפון אפריקה.

  אני בעלת תואר שני בלימודי יהדות ממכללת ספרטוס עם התמחות בחינוך ,כמו גם תואר ראשון באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים בלימודי מזרח תיכון, תכנית למצטיינים ומדעי המדינה.
